System Engineer

Storage Enabling Technologies Group

Overview:

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one System Engineer position available. As a member of the Storage Enabling Technologies group, the System Engineer will participate in the evaluation, delivery and support of storage-related products (hardware and software) and services to the NCSA user community. System administration of multiple machines (primarily Linux and Unix) hosting data-intensive activities that require a variety of storage strategies will also be a focus of this position. In addition, as part of the SET team, this position will assist with center-wide backups, SAN disk deployment, parallel file system management, and basic DBA tasks. This individual must be able to work with a diverse user community and be comfortable in a leading-edge environment.

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field required. Alternate degree fields may be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies
• Experience in the management and support of UNIX or Linux systems.
• Experience writing shell scripts.
• 2 or more years of Unix or Linux System administration experience in a production environment

Preferred Experience:

• Experience with networked environments and a wide variety of software and hardware.
• Experience with SAN administration.
• Experience with back-up software administration.
• Experience with administration of multiple databases.
• Experience with multiple file system types.
• Experience with High Performance Computing environments and data movement/transfer

This is an academic professional position at NCSA and is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
