System Engineer

Overview:
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one System Engineer position available. The primary responsibility of this position is to analyze new hardware and software needs, which includes the evaluation, installation, upgrade, maintenance, support and servicing of hardware and software for storage projects. This position will also enhance the quality and optimal use of the computing environment and the seamless integration of various systems and services. The incumbent must be able to work with a diverse population to analyze new hardware and software. The scope of this position also includes development work and integration for the Blue Waters petascale computing system at NCSA. This includes HSM software development, parallel file system configurations and file transfer protocols.
Required Education, Training and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field required. Alternate degree fields may be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies
- Training in the management and support of individual technologies such as UNIX and Linux system administration.
- 2 years of development experience
- 2 years system LINUX/Unix system administration
- Experience with Perl, python, and C or C++
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with networked environments and a wide variety of software and hardware
- Experience with parallel file systems
- Experience with large data movement across sites
- Experience with HPC (high performance computing) systems in general
This is an academic professional position at NCSA and is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
