Deputy Director for Research

Institute for Advanced Computing Applications and Technologies (IACAT)

Overview:

The Institute for Advanced Computing Applications and Technologies, along with the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has one Deputy Director for Research position available. The Deputy Director for Research shares responsibility for managing the Institute for Advanced Computing Applications and Technologies with the IACAT Director, Executive Director, and Deputy Director for Cyberinfrastructure. The Deputy Director for Research is responsible for managing all of the activities in IACAT that relate to the Research Themes. The Deputy Director may also represent IACAT when the Director is unavailable and takes on other assignments as deemed necessary by the Director.

The primary responsibility of this senior manager is to work with the IACAT Director, Executive Director, Deputy Director for Cyberinfrastructure, Research Theme Leaders, and Associate Directors to develop and implement a strategy for advancing the Institute's role in research and education and to oversee all of the activities in the Research Themes to ensure consistency with this strategy and the excellence of the research activities. The Deputy Director for Research also assists the IACAT Director in the preparation and presentation of program plans for and reviews of IACAT. The Deputy Director for Research works closely with the Deputy Director for Cyberinfrastructure to investigate and evaluate opportunities to use NCSA's unique capabilities and resources to solve critical national problems.

Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in science or engineering, computer science or related field required. Alternative degree fields will be considered if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to computational science and engineering research).
  • More than 10 years professional experience beyond (or before) Ph.D. degree required and at least 3 years of administration experience highly desired.
  • Knowledge of UIUC campus research and educational programs strongly preferred.

As this position will be established under mutual agreement with the incumbent's home unit and IACAT/NCSA, as a joint faculty appointment (9/12), with partial funding, applicants should be currently employed by UIUC in a faculty based appointment. This position is non-benefits eligible.
