Creating a Digital Watershed for Integrated Management in the Chicago Metropolitan Area

Past events:

October 2-3, 2006: Integrated Water Management in Chicago: Current Status and Future Possibilities

Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007
Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
R&D Laboratory
6001 W. Pershing Road
Cicero, Illinois

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD), the Institute for Sustainability of Intensively Managed Landscapes (ISIML), and the new Initiative on Adaptive Infrastructure Sensing and Information Systems (AISIS, supported by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) are jointly sponsoring a workshop on Implementing the WATERS Network Vision: Creating a Digital Watershed for Integrated Management in the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

The major goal of this workshop is to brainstorm ideas for initial research topics and provide networking opportunities for forming teams to submit white papers to AISIS for research funding. The call for research topics requests white papers by March 16, 2007, and five students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will begin work next fall. The research will investigate the creation of a WATERS Network urban field facility in Chicago in order to prepare for the call for observatories that is expected to occur in mid-2008 (see http://cleaner.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ for information on the WATERS Network). The field facility would be part of the larger Illinois River Basin observatory that ISIML has been organizing. The research should include both infrastructure development (sensing and/or cyberinfrastructure) as well as advances on scientific or management issues of concern in Chicago.

Attendees are invited to present posters on topics relating to integrated water management in the Chicago region. This could include previous and ongoing efforts that would be of interest to the attendees, as well as ideas for research that might be submitted in answer to the call for proposals. Please upload poster abstracts by Feb. 19.
