Parallel Brainstorming Sessions: SNA for CI

9:30 - 10:30 am (8 groups)

Four sets of questions will be brainstormed in parallel by eight groups. Group leaders are identified in bold.

The topics were selected and arranged in terms of the lifecycle of CI—from the initial specification, through the mobilization and development, the deployment and wide-scale adoption, and finally to the scaling and sustainability of cyberinfrastructure.

The one hour brainstorming session could be used as follows:

1. 10 minutes to generate a list of major challenges for CI research and practice in the lifecycle stage assigned to your group.
2. 10 minutes to select from the list generated in 1), those challenges that could be addressed using SNA.
3. 40 minutes select from the list generated in 2) one or two challenges and illustrate the potential utility of SNA theory, methods, and tools using concrete examples.

Deliverables: Two lists from 1) and 2) and one or two concrete examples of how SNA can be used to address CI challenges.

(CI.I) Initial Specification of Cyberinfrastructure
What challenges do cyberinfrastructure researchers and practitioners face when defining the scope and functionality of a cyberinfrastructure for a specific community? And, how can SNA help the community address these challenges?

What are the challenges that cyberinfrastructure researchers and practitioners face when they aim to mobilize resources for the development of a cyberinfrastructure for a specific community? What trust and incentive design issues exist? And, how can SNA help the community address these challenges?

What helps or hurts adoption, deployment, and utilization of a cyberinfrastructure? What challenges do cyberinfrastructure researchers and practitioners face when they aim to utilize cyberinfrastructure for the referral needs of a community? What education and outreach challenges exist? And, how can SNA help the community address these challenges?

(CI.IV) Scaling, Security and Sustainability of a Cyberinfrastructure
What scaling issues exist—in terms of number, size and complexity of datasets served, # of algorithms/services provided, compute resources offered, # of users supported by a cyberinfrastructure? What challenges exist in terms of privacy & security issues? What challenges exist in terms of sustaining cyberinfrastructure over 10-20 years? And, how can SNA help the community address these challenges?
