NCSA Software Database First Step to Alliance RIB
To better address the needs of the NCSA user community, the list of software available at the center is now offered using a database. The served information is updated and more complete. This is a first step to an Alliance-wide software repository. §

New NCSA HPC Index
If you occasionally have trouble finding some needed information in the Scientific Computing space on the NCSA website, help is now available! The NCSA HPC index page gives you an alphabetical view on the HPC-oriented information and resources. New NCSA consultant Scott Koranda created this resource drawing on his experiences traversing the SCD pages. §

NCSA's Plans for Mass Storage
NCSA can move files around at 40 megabytes per second. Only three percent of files stored for more than one year are ever retrieved. What do these numbers tell NCSA's high-performance data management team about the mass storage needs for the future? §

AHPCC Supercluster Los Lobos Unveiled
The Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center (AHPCC), one of the Alliance's primary partners in providing advanced computational services, will take delivery of an Alliance-funded, 512-processor Linux supercluster within the next month -- a move that will give this nationwide partnership the largest open production Linux supercluster aimed at the research community. §

NLANR Electronic Newsletter
The Network Anaylsis Times, also known as NA Times, is a new publication from the National Laboratory for Advanced Network Research. PI Hans-Werner Braun says in his welcome that NA Times is intended to communicate NLANR's work, encourage use of their data, and foster collaboration. This document is delivered in PDF format. §

Three-Year No-Cost Extension of vBNS
NSF and MCI WorldCom recently agreed to a three-year, no-cost extension that will keep the very high performance Backbone Network System (vBNS) operating until at least 2003. The network connects 94 U.S. universities to other research institutions at speeds up to 2.4 gigabits per second. §

Alliance Adopts PKI for Security
This press release provides additional information about the Alliance's use of the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) reported in the February issue of data link. §

Conferences and Workshops & Training Events

Globus Training via the Alliance Access Grid
This two-day workshop, to be held May 3-4, will introduce the concept of Grid computing and the Globus Toolkit, a software toolkit for supporting Grid applications. Included are a high-level overview for executives, directors, scientific leads, and program managers; an introductory tutorial explaining the capabilities and services provided by the Globus Toolkit; and a full-day, detailed tutorial for software developers. §

PNNL Announces Molecular Science Software Suite Tutorial
A June 2000 two-day workshop presents NWChem and Ecce, part of the Molecular Science Software Suite (MS3). MS3 is a comprehensive, integrated set of tools for understanding complex chemical systems at the molecular level. MS3 has three components: the Extensible Computational Chemistry Environment (Ecce), the Northwest Computational Chemistry Software (NWChem), and Parallel Software Development Tools (ParSoft). §

UVa-Applied Metacomputing Workshop on Using Legion
A hands-on two-day lab for running applications under Legion, an object-based metasystems software project, will be held at the University of Virginia in mid-May. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own code with them to the sessions. §

Fifth NLANR/Internet2 Techs Workshop
Building on the success of the previous four NLANR/Internet2 workshops is the fifth workshop to be held in Minneapolis-St. Paul in mid-May. Topics will include multicast, video conferencing, optical and wireless networking, voice over IP, optimizing high speed links, tools and performance measurement, and network-based applications. Case studies, infrastructure updates, and the latest from Gigapops and campuses round out the agenda. §

International Forum "Women in Engineering and Science"
A conference aimed at spreading the knowledge of best practices in industry, education, and government to create a diversified, well-trained and multicultural workforce -- one with significant women in engineering roles -- will be held in Germany in June. §

Workshop on Scalable Web Services
With the growth of the web comes a strain on web-based services such as metacomputing resources and domain name competition. Technologies such as agents, metacomputing systems, distributed caching systems, and enhanced scheduling methodologies are all advancing to meet the information distribution needs of a wired world. The First International Workshop on Scalable Web Services in August will bring together the researchers and practitioners working on theoretical and experimental research in this area. §

ACM/SIGARCH's International Conference on Supercomputing
ACM/SIGARCH's international conference series provides a technical forum for engineers and scientists to exchange ideas and research results relating to high-performance, distributed, and supercomputing systems. ICS 2000 focuses on high-performance and parallel computing systems viewed from the perspectives of applications, software, and architectures. The April registration deadline is fast approaching! §
