NLANR Clearinghouse Survey Available
Developers of the NLANR Advanced Applications Database (AAD) are soliciting comments and suggestions about the database from users. If you have not yet uesd the Clearinghouse, take a look at this comprehensive resource. Then give the development team your feedback. §

PITAC Report on Open Source Software
The President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) transmitted to the President in mid-September an open source development model that PITAC members believe "represents a viable strategy for producing high quality software through a mixture of public, private, and academic partnerships." §

MPI Course Availability Announced
In two recent surveys, Alliance users said they were interested in receiving web-based training on MPI. A multi-institutional training team recently completed their work on a comprehensive online course on the message passing interface, which makes distributed computing possible. The Web-CT environment is ideal for students because it provides many online learning tools that make taking the course easy. §

NCSA Announces Power Outage in November
Because of expansion of the NCSA Advanced Computation Building, NCSA must shut off power to that building in late-November. Read about the specifics and more details on the construction. §

PACI and Alliance Resources Increase

Higher Education PKI Activity Groups
CREN, EDUCAUSE and Internet2 are working together on the development of PKI (public key infrastructure) for the higher education community. Their website provides information about the activtity groups' efforts in the policy and technical areas. §

HDF Inspector Released
Space Research Software's free HDF data tool lets you examine and verify the contents of Hierarchical Data Format (HDF, HDF-EOS and HDF5) files. Data can be readily explored in a tree-like interface or in a grid window. Windows OS only. §

HDF Newsletter #55
The NCSA HDF (Hierarchical Data Format) Group recently announced the posting of newsletter #55 that provides the details of the newest releaseof HDF5 Java products and revisions to the HDF5 XML DTD. The newsletter provides all the information you need, including acronym expansion. §

Alliance Announces PetSC training
Join your colleagues for a PETSc training course being offered this month over the Access Grid. The workshop will be held on October 17 and 18. Registration closes soon so register today for the site closest to you. §

Megaconference II
It takes place on Halloween and says it is the world's "first totally online conference on the use of teleconferencing in research and high education." To participate, you need good Internet connectivity and good H.323 video conferencing equipment. If you are attending the Fall2000 Internet2 Member Meeting, you can take part in the auditorium! §

CCGrid2001 Call for Papers
If you didn't get "down under" for the Olympics, you now have another opportunity to visit Australia. CCGrid2001, which bills itself as a symposium on cluster computing and the grid, will be held in Brisbane in May 2001. The current call for papers closes in early November. §
