- IntelliBadge™ technology to be showcased at SC02
- NCSA's new technology, IntelliBadge™, will be showcased at SC2002. NCSA's Experimental Technologies Division provided the impetus for this technology—to find a way to "personalize" a conference attendee's experience in a convention center setting, according to Volodymyr Kindratenko, research scientist at NCSA and technical lead of the IntelliBadge project.

- NCSA upgrades SMP capabilities with IBM pSeries 690 systems
- NCSA has decided to replace the SGI Origin2000 systems with a set of IBM pSeries 690 systems. There will be twelve systems each with 32 IBM POWER4 processors running at 1.3 gigahertz. Each processor has a peak performance of 5.2 gigaflops per second, and each system will have a minimum of 64 gigabytes RAM. The systems will each include four 2X FiberChannel interfaces and four Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interfaces. NCSA will be configuring four of the systems with additional memory to bring them up to 256 gigabytes each.

- NMI-R2 is now available
- NMI-R2 is now in official release, featuring the GRIDS Center Software Suite and NMI-EDIT Components. It integrates key software packages, standards, and best practices for science, engineering, and education. Downloads are free to the public. Starting with R2, NMI will issue releases every six months—in October and April—to provide the stable, predictable middleware infrastructure that the community has identified as an important need.

- GlobusToolkit 2.2 is now available
- This release features updated components of the Globus Project's Data Grid software, MDS-2.2, and GRAM 1.6. Binary releases are available on the Linux 2.x and Solaris 8 platforms in addition to build notes on several other platforms.

- New h5import tool for HDF5
- The NCSA HDF team recently developed a new tool for HDF5 called h5import. H5import will convert data stored in one or more ASCII or binary files into one or more datasets (in accordance with the user-specified type and storage properties) in an existing or new HDF5 file.

- Papers invited for special edition of JPDC
- The Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing is seeking papers for a special issue on high-performance computational biology. The issue will provide a forum for publishing important research in high-performance computing solutions as it relates to problems in molecular biology. - There are now 132 active Access Grid sites—91 in the U.S. and 41 elsewhere around the world (in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom). - SC02 late registration
- Information regarding on-site late registration for the 15th Annual SC conference is available on the SC02 website. The conference, themed "From Terabytes to Insights," takes place at the November 16-21, 2002 in Baltimore, MD. On-site registrants will pay late registration fees. Forms of payment accepted on-site: credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Diners Club), traveler's checks, company and personal checks, and cash. Wire transfers will not be accepted at on-site registration.

- 3rd International Workshop on Grid Computing
- The 3rd International Workshop on Grid Computing will be held in conjunction with SC02 on November 18 in Baltimore, Maryland. GRID 2002 is an international meeting that brings together the Grid community of researchers, developers, practitioners, and users. GRID 2002 will have a special focus on Grid Applications. Those registered to attend the SC02 technical program will be admitted to GRID 2002. On-site registrants will pay late registration fees. - Don't forget to register for the December 4-5 NASA HDF and HDF-EOS Workshop VI in San Francisco. The workshop will include tutorials, tool demonstrations and training, and discussion of standards. Registration ends November 8.

- Register for the November 18-20 Internet2 IPv6 Workshop
- The University of Houston in Houston, Texas will be hosting an Internet2 IPv6 workshop November 18-20. The goal of the workshop is to design and set up a functioning IPv6 network. This network will be connected to the Internet2 IPv6 network, and thus to the rest of the global IPv6 network.
