NLANR Network Performance Advisor Update
Some highlights of the up and coming NLANR Performance Advisor beta, due in August, including the Performance Data Historical Archiver (PDHA) and the Analysis Engine.
NCSA's Dell Xeon Cluster (Tungsten) Enters Production Mode
Tungsten, which in November was announced as the fourth fastest computer in the world according to the 22nd Top500 List, went into production April 26, 2004. The initial production environment on Tungsten consists of 768 compute nodes, each consisting in turn of two 3.06GHz Intel Xeon processors, 3 GBytes RAM, and 1 GigE interface. The cluster is intended as an upgrade/replacement for Platinum, the IBM Pentium III cluster which has been in production since 2002; current Platinum users are strongly encouraged to transfer all or part of their remaining allocations to Tungsten, for which they will receive a favorable conversion rate of 2:1 for Platinum to Tungsten service units until June 30, 2004. To transfer your allocation, contact the Allocations staff at allocations@ncsa.uiuc.edu with PI and PSN information and the number of SUs you wish to transfer.

News Stories for May

Next Alliance Allocation Application Deadline July 6
The next review board meeting for Alliance allocations will be held on September 8-9, 2004. The deadline for the next round of proposals is July 6. Principal investigators will be notified of their awards by September 30, 2004.
New NMI Proposal Competition Deadline May 14
The 2004 competition focuses on two areas for future funding: (1) integration of middleware technologies with domain science and engineering applications to create production environments; and (2) development and prototyping of new middleware functions and services. See the NSF website for full submission guidelines.
Continuum Supports Distributed Scientists in Intensive Collaborative Sessions
The Continuum, a distributed, collaborative "amplified work environment" where collaborators gather to solve problems assisted by advanced collaboration, computation and visualization technologies, was demonstrated at the Private Sector Program meeting April 26-28. The visualization and collaboration technologies that make up the Continuum include interactive stereoscopic computer graphics, multi-site audio/video conferencing, and high resolution tiled graphics displays. Backing these technologies are clusters of PCs connected over extremely highspeed gigabit networks.
New World Record Announced for Internet Performance
A new Internet2 Land Speed Record was set April 20, 2004 during the I2-LSR competition for the highest-bandwidth, end-to-end networks. An international team transferred data from Los Angeles, California, to Geneva, Switzerland—a distance of nearly 11,000 kilometers—at an average rate of 6.25 Gbps, nearly 10,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection.

Software Releases

HDF5 High Level APIs Released
The HDF5 High Level APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) consist of a set of functions built on top of the basic HDF5 library. The purpose of this software is to simplify the steps needed to create objects in HDF5. Current APIs include interfaces for creating images and tables and for working with datasets and attributes. The current APIs have been tested with HDF5-1.6.2. Important note: with this release, several read/write functions in the Table API were changed to include an extra parameter.
Condor 6.7.0 Released
The 6.7.0 version of the full-featured batch system and cluster management tool which reuses wasted CPU cycles features network failure tolerance between submit and execute, job mirroring between multiple submit points, high availability between some daemons, DRMAA support, the ability to submit into grids managed by GT3 web serivces, NorduGrid, and Oracle jobs, support for MyProxy Online Credential Management, over two gigabyte filetransfer support, steaming output from vanilla jobs, and many other features.
Condor "Setup Hawkeye" Available
Version 0.1.0 allows users to configure Condor in order to add features of the monitoring/archiving package Hawkeye to an existing Condor.
Zone SRB Data Management Middleware 3.1 Released
Zone SRB supports scalable data collections from single-user to large, multi-institution collaborations. New capabilities in Version 3.1 include expanded checksumming capabilities for enhanced data integrity, a smart backup utility that can efficiently synchronize collections, replicating only new or changed data, new cross-zone authentication-delegation features, a number of features for improved installation and administration, and a new Trash Can system that gives users much faster interactive file deletion speeds, while also allowing recovery of deleted files.
NPACI Rocks 3.2.0 Beta Released
Version 3.2.0b of the cluster management software includes support for new platforms, the latest RHEL kernel, ability to network install frontend machines, color for kickstart graph, several bug fixes, and more.
