- Alliance User Survey
- NCSA, on behalf of its Alliance partners, recently unveiled an online user survey
for completion by computational researchers using Alliance resources provided by
Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center, Boston University, Maui High Performance
Computing Center, University of Kentucky, University of Wisconsin, and NCSA. If you
are an Alliance-allocated user of high-performance or high-throughput resources, please

- Workshop on Virtual Reality
Techniques for Scientific Visualization
- Boston University Charles River Campus is the site of a
workshop aimed at faculty, students, and other scientists who are
interested in VR facilities such as the CAVE and Immersadesk as a tool for
scientific research, including computational steering, data exploration and
evaluation, presentation and education.
Participation is free and open
to all researchers. Pre-registration for the June 17-18 workshop is required.

- Origin2000 Repository Adds Publications Page
- Alliance PACS site Boston University is the home of the SGI Origin2000 Repository
that is a source of information and training materials as well as a forum for idea-exchange
and experience-sharing for users. A recent addition to the site
is a publications page; in development is an FAQ focused on new Origin2000 sites.

- Chautauquas!
- The Alliance Partners for Advanced Computational Services (PACS) are pleased to
invite you to one of three regional Chautauquas to be held later this year.
Chautauquas, called "the most American place in America" by Teddy Roosevelt,
are being reinterpreted for 1999 as virtual technology road shows highlighting how
technology will change the face of research, collaboration, and education in the
21st century.

- PACS Members Attend AHPCC AltaCluster Unveiling
- A complex organization like the Alliance calls for meetings -- by phone,
by teleconference, and in person. The recent unveiling of Albuquerque High
Performance Computing Center's new AltaCluster running Linux OS. The presence of
a digital camera made a "photo shoot" of the PACS meeting and the cluster
ceremony possible.

- Summer Research Opportunity Internships Available for 1999
- Interested in a Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) internship? Are you
a mentor candidate? The 6-week internship is designed to interest talented women and
undergraduate minority students in the
computational sciences. The Committee on Institutional Cooperation, an Alliance PACS partner is
coordinating the internship program.
Review the complete information to decide if you want to participate
as an intern or mentor.

- The Grid Forum
- The Grid Forum is an informal consortium of institutions and individuals working on wide-area
computing and computational grids. Current activities include definition and development of a
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol-based information service for representing
resources and a Public Key Infrastructure-based system for Grid systems on which
a single-sign-on is used for resources distributed over multiple
administrative domains. Two listservs are available, and forum staff are planning
a June 1999 meeting at NASA-Ames.

- Introducing
NLANR Packets
- The National Laboratory for Applied Network Research (NLANR) is now
issuing an online newsletter with news, information, and a calendar of events
of interest to researchers and programmers at NSF High
Performance Connections sites and HPNSP (high-performance network service providers).
§
- Internet2 Newswire
Listserv Announced
- News for and about the Internet2 community is now available through a moderated
listserv that will offer information on member organizations and their activities,
event announcements, and general news related to the I2 community. For details about subscribing

- Network Interface
Papers Sought
- Cluster Computing is soliciting papers for a February 2000
special issue on network interface (NI) design for high-performance distributed
computing. Contributions are solicited for papers on
NI hardware/software architecture and its interaction
with the network and/or host (e.g., host memory system,
I/O architecture, and operating system) and related topics.
Particularly encouraged are papers that describe experimental work
using commercially available workstations or networks.

- Video Conferencing Cookbook
- In February, SURA released the Video Conferencing
Cookbook, a web-based document that explores the role of video conferencing
in today's workplace. The applications and examples are oriented to the needs of the
academic and
research community (meetings from one-on-one to many-on-many, classes, and
collaboration). Expected audience levels range from beginning and intermediate/advanced
users of video conferencing to the new organizational integrator.

- Digital Video for the Next Millennium
- Digital Video for the Next Millennium, a white paper from four southeastern universities and
NYSERNet, provides an overview of digital video on demand -- the underlying technology,
the client/server capabilities currently available and development areas for the near future.

- Habanero
- In mid-April, NCSA released version 2.0 of Habanero, a framework that allows
teams to collaborate in real time, exchange data, compare notes, talk to
each other and perform complex simulations on supercomputers--regardless of
where they are located. Written in Java,
Habanero runs under any OS that supports Java 1.1.6 or higher.
