The total is somewhere around 80 machines or so, unless we count the working ones. Then we're at about 70. But then there's the offsite machines, so we're back at 80...
Of course, these all run different operating systems, such as NeXTStep, OSF/1, Linux, Irix, Solaris, SunOS, AIX, Sony News, Stardent, AUX, and HP/UX....
Erik Wolf is my trusty sidekick, and together we tackle all sorts of problems. The most difficult part is getting these machines to talk to one another, which is done through networking. We also network to DOS machines and Macintoshes, which are managed by David Karner and Pat McGraw, respectively.
It seems something is always breaking, but we usually team up to solve problems whenever possible. Of course, none of us could do anything without the expert assistance of Rory Murtagh, and Pat McGraw seems to always be there to help when network problems arise.
Other things that I do include keeping email working, doing the DNS thing, getting rid of the evil NIS, upgrading hardware and software, writing scripts, restoring and creating backup tapes, creating SLIP/PPP accounts, recabling the network, and anything else that might have to do with computers.
People always wonder why a guy with a degree in Landscape Architecture and working on a Master's in Horticulture has a job with a computer company. Fact is, I can't help but be with computers. I think it's in my blood or something...
