Viburnum Book:

I'm currently working on a book on the genus Viburnum, hopefully to be published through Timber Press. It's slow going, but I'm expecting the spring air will encourage me to put a little more time into this.

Plant Database:

I'm currently working on a database management program intended for use in the horticultural industry. I'm trying to get my friends to help, but they're not really into plants too much. It'll probably be published through Mallorn Computing, the company that Jon Dugan and I both run.

Developed in a modular fashion, the database can hold a variable number of fields and data types, and can convert textfiles into binary index files with the correct specified parameters. It is being written in a portable, hardware-independent style, with intent of providing binaries on a variety of different platforms.

UIPLANTS:

UIPLANTS is a project developed through the University of Illinois to aid students and contractors in the identification of woody plant species and conveyance of information to customers. Containing over 800 species of plants and 6000 color images, the program boasts such features as side-by-side image comparisons, encyclopedic entries, slideshows of selected plants and features, and text highlighting key identification features.

As the programmer for this project, it is my responsibility to respond to student needs and add them to UIPLANTS. Other duties include the gathering of information on various species and writing text descriptions into the program, photographing plant material, and always keeping an eye on the market to see what direction various technologies are taking.

br:

I got sick of having to run su every time that I wanted to do something as root on my Linux system. I wrote a quick C program called br ("become root") so that I could run single programs, scripts, etc. as root by just making br the first argument on the commandline. Still somewhat under development -- always adding new features. Should probably be rewritten anyhow; I shudder when I think of how I did things back then (in terms of programming).
