NCSA Telnet for the PC (DOS only) and NCSA Telnet for the Macintosh were developed
in projects whose funding ended in late 1994 and 1995. The software
developed by those projects remains available in both source and executable
form from
NCSA's anonymous FTP server, but there are
no available resources
for further development or support of this software.
Among the implications of this are that there has been no formal review
of this software to determine if they have any "year 2000" bugs (although
we have no reason to believe that there would be any), and that if any
of these programs does not work in your environment, we have no one to
fix it for you.

The final release of NCSA Telnet for the PC was version 2.3.08. Note
that this
software was intended for use on DOS, not Windows. Information on this
release, including the answers to a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
may be found at
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/PCTelnet/.
Because
of the reduced interest in and support for DOS, we are unaware of a supported
alternative to NCSA Telnet for the PC.
For Windows 3.x/95/NT, the site
http://cws.internet.com/ has listings, reviews, and ratings for a
variety of applications, including telnet.

The last official release of NCSA Telnet for the Macintosh was version 2.6.
Work was begun but not completed on a subsequent version, with beta releases
through 2.7b4. Note that NCSA did not release a binary identified as version
2.7b5; we have been unable to determine the origin of the binary that is so
identified, but the final source file for version 2.7 was identified as
2.7b5, so it is possible that this binary is nothing more than the result
of someone else compiling that source file. Information on NCSA Telnet for
the Macintosh may be found at
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/MacTelnet/Docs/index.html.
There
are a number of supported alternatives to NCSA Telnet for the Macintosh.
Many of the freeware and shareware alternatives may be found at
http://www.tucows.com. Among those
offerings are MacTelnet and Better Telnet. Both are
ongoing developments based on the final NCSA Telnet source files.
MacTelnet can also be obtained from

Better
Telnet can also be obtained from
