NCSA New User Information |
Welcome to NCSA! Whether you're a high-performance system user or a new
staff member, we hope that computing at NCSA will be a very productive
and successful opportunity for you.
|
Password and Authentication Information
|
|
You have a single password which will allow you to access any NCSA
system on which you have accounts. (This single password is generally
referred to as your Kerberos password).
You must change your initial password within 10 days or it will expire.
NCSA also requires you to change your password at least once a year.
To
change your password, use this
secure web page.
NCSA offers a
webpage with tips on selecting good passwords that you should consider
when you change your password.
For security reasons, DO NOT send your password to anyone including NCSA
staff, via electronic email. Never share your password with anyone else.
All connections to NCSA high-performance systems require either Kerberos V5
or Secure Shell (SSH) authentication. Additional information on Kerberos
and SSH is available at the
Required Encryption Software page.

All users get an account on the NCSA mass storage system (UniTree) when they
receive an allocation on a HPC system, as well as an account on NCSA's
email systems.
When a project expires or the allocation is exhausted, the associated
accounts are terminated. After the termination date, the user has one week of
Kerberos FTP read-only access to the system. The UniTree account remains
active in read-only mode for 4 months after all NCSA high-performance
computing accounts have been terminated.
Please be aware that a user's files are private under University of
Illinois policy and cannot be transferred to another user or PI without
written permission from the user.
