Automated Saving of Files to Mass Storage from Batch Jobs on the
NCSA IBMp690 (copper)
A new utility, saveafterjob, is available on the NCSA IBMp690 (copper)
for automated, guaranteed saving of output files from batch jobs to the
mass storage system. The transfer occurs after the job has ended. For
those who used NCSA's SGI Origin2000, this is similar to the msscmd -b
option that was available there. This was implemented for the following
reasons:
- Users sometimes have the problem of their intermediate or output
files from batch jobs being purged from the scratch filesystem
before they can be saved. This may happen in the event of system
crashes, abnormal exit of jobs due to limit violations, or problems
with the mass storage system. Since the transfer is now guaranteed,
this feature will benefit users tremendously.
- The time limit for batch jobs is based on wall-clock time, so this
feature will allow you to estimate the wall-clock time for your jobs
without the variability of the time for transfer of files to
mass storage within the batch job.
