SGI Java
Created 01/24/2000:
There are several different versions of java and the JDK available on the
Origin machines. The default version is 3.1.1 (which is based upon the
Sun Java release 1.1.6). This is the last version of Java which is or
will be compatible with the SGI CosmoCode product. This version is
installed in the system default location of /usr/java.
Java 1.2 is installed in /usr/local/java1.2/usr/java.
Java 1.2.1 (released 11/1999) is installed in /usr/local/java1.2.1/usr/java.
If you need to use any of these versions, your path and environment should
be changed appropriately.
SGI has the following to say about the 1.2.1 release:
"WARNING TO CURRENT AND/OR FUTURE COSMO CODE USERS: Do NOT install this
version of Java2 (TM) if you are a user who plans to use or still needs to
be able to use any version of Cosmo Code. Users currently or planning to use
Cosmo Code should install or remain at previous/older versions of Java (TM).
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: This release is targeted towards users who want
Java2 features for Server side Java development. Due to numerous client-side
Java problems in Java2, we are not recommending Java2 to users doing Client
side work."
10/19/2000:
Java 1.2.2 (Java2) is now the installed default. It can be found in
/usr/java/bin. As noted above, this breaks the Cosmo Code users. If
you are one of those users, please contact consult@ncsa.uiuc.edu
More information about this release can be found at:
http://www.sgi.com/developers/devtools/languages/java2_122.html
10/11/2001:
Java2TM 1.3 MR for SGI IRIX is now installed in /usr/local/java2-1.3/usr/java.
Java2TM 1.3.1-pre-BETA for SGI IRIX is now installed in
/usr/local/java2-1.3.1-pre-BETA.
As before, if you need to use any of these versions, your path and
environment should be changed appropriately.
