Nastran

Brief Description:

MSC.Nastran is a commercial finite element code used to solve a wide variety of real world engineering problems, including heat transfer, linear and nonlinear structural response, buckling, modal analysis, full harmonic response, transient dynamic response and aeroelasticity.

MSC.Nastran is available to all NCSA academic users on the following system:

  • SGI/Altix (co.ncsa.uiuc.edu) version MD 2006

Commercial use of MD.Nastran is governed by the NCSA Private Sector Program. Please contact Seid Koric at skoric@ncsa.uiuc.edu for more information.

Using MSC.Nastran

  • Special script called nastran has been written for interactive and batch submission of nastran jobs. It requires at least one command line argument. The most common usage is:  nastran input_file_name.
After answering a few questions about job resources, it will be run interactively or send to the batch systems. This script includes Shared Memory Parallel (SMP) and MPI (DMP) solvers. Use parallel features only if your input has more then 20,000 dofs. All users must be added to the access list for Nastran.
  • Type the following command for additional information: nastran help
  • For on-line documentation type start patran and its online help.
Note: Remember to set your DISPLAY and xhost variables.
  • MSC. Nastran parallel benchmarks performed on different platfroms are available from MSC site.
