2006 Summer Faculty Fellowships
National Center for Supercomputing Applications
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has long been a leader in the development and deployment of new computing and software technologies for the scientific and engineering community.
Funding is available for six summer fellowships for faculty interested in contributing to the creation of a national cyberinfrastructure for science and engineering.

Cyberenvironments
NCSA is creating cyberenvironments that will simplify the integration of distributed computing and data resources into scientific and engineering research. We look forward to working with faculty who specialize in scientific and engineering applications, graphical user interfaces and portals, workflow and collaboration software, and data analysis and visualization tools.
Cyber-resources
NCSA provides high-end computing resources needed by the scientific and engineering communities. We want to spend the summer with faculty who are researching ways to make these resources better suit the communities they serve and to improve the computing infrastructure that they operate in.
Innovative Systems
Petascale computing is now a realizable goal that will impact all scientific and engineering research, but the best pathway to petascale computing is unclear. Come and explore those possibilities with us.
Cyberenvironments in the Classroom
Few of the advantages of a national cyberinfrastructure will be realized without scientists and engineers who understand the new capabilities that it provides. NCSA is interested in collaborating with faculty to bring cyberenvironments into the classroom. |
Who is eligible to apply?
NCSA Summer Faculty Fellowships will provide 10 weeks' salary, local housing expenses, and travel to and from Champaign, Illinois. This summer program is open to faculty members who are NOT at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Proposed collaborations must be discussed with NCSA staff before applications are made, and applications must be endorsed by the staff member with whom the Fellow will be working. (UIUC Faculty members may apply to the NCSA/UIUC Faculty Fellowships in Spring 2006 for the academic year beginning in Fall 2006.)
Selection Criteria
Fellows will be selected by a review team consisting of NCSA staff and nationally recognized researchers. Applications will be judged on:
- The synergy of proposed work with NCSA's stated goals and ongoing efforts.
- The degree to which the applicant has established a research cohort to work with while at NCSA.
- The promise of the resulting collaboration and the significance of the proposed project.
- The quality of the plans to carry out the project.
- The candidate's record of accomplishment in areas related to the proposed work.
Deadline for submission
The application deadline was March 15, 2006. Awards will be announced by March 31, 2006.
